Our team recently returned from Ireland where we spent time with our partners on the ground, reviewing current operations and exploring new opportunities in the region. This visit provided us with valuable insights into the timber market in Ireland and reinforced our commitment to understanding our supply chains through direct engagement.

Understanding Operations Through Field Visits

During the visit, we toured active plantation sites to see the harvesting process firsthand. Rather than relying on reports or second-hand accounts, we believe there is significant value in witnessing operations as they happen. From the managed forestry sites to the preparation of timber for transport, we gained practical knowledge that informs how we work with our Irish partners.

These field visits are essential for understanding the full supply chain and ensuring our partnerships deliver quality results. By walking through the plantation sites and speaking directly with the teams involved in harvesting and preparation, we can assess the standards being maintained and verify that operations align with our expectations. We gain clarity on production capabilities, timelines, and the measures in place to ensure consistent quality.

The Value of Face-to-Face Collaboration

The trip reinforced the value of face-to-face collaboration with our partners. There is no substitute for sitting down with the people managing these operations, understanding their perspective on market conditions, and discussing how we can work together more effectively. In person, conversations flow more naturally and we can address concerns or opportunities that might not emerge through standard communications.

Building relationships in this way creates a foundation of trust and mutual understanding. Our partners in Ireland now know us as more than a trading partner. They understand our standards, our approach to business, and our commitment to reliability. This personal connection means that when challenges arise, we have a relationship strong enough to navigate them collaboratively.

Exploring New Opportunities

Beyond reviewing current operations, the visit gave us the opportunity to explore new opportunities in the region. We discussed potential expansions of our partnership, identified new sourcing possibilities, and considered how we might develop our business in the Irish market. These conversations would have been far less productive without the benefit of seeing operations firsthand and meeting with key decision makers in person.

One significant insight from our time in Ireland is the current market situation. There is an excess of wood available in the Irish market, creating both a challenge and an opportunity. However, the ports currently have limited export capacity, which constrains how much timber can be moved through traditional channels. This bottleneck has prompted us to explore alternative logistics solutions. We are actively investigating the possibility of containerising timber and exporting through Dublin, which would allow us to access greater volumes of Irish timber and move them to our international clients more efficiently.

The Irish timber industry continues to offer strong potential for reliable supply. Our partners there are committed to sustainable forestry practices and maintaining high standards throughout their operations. By deepening our understanding of what they can offer and how we can support their growth through innovative logistics solutions, we position ourselves to provide even better service to our clients while also creating new opportunities for our Irish partners to reach broader markets.

Fresh Perspective on Industry Operations

The trip gave us a fresh perspective on the timber industry's operations in Ireland. Spending time in the region allowed us to observe market trends, assess the competitive landscape, and understand the regulatory and environmental context in which our partners operate. This context is invaluable when we are making decisions about our sourcing strategy and assessing the reliability of our supply chain.

We observed firsthand the commitment to responsible forestry management that characterises many operations in Ireland. The attention to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and long term planning impressed us and reinforces our confidence in our partnerships there. These are standards we share with our clients and that define how we choose to do business.

Building on Momentum

We're looking forward to building on the relationships and opportunities identified during this visit. The conversations we had and the understanding we gained will inform how we approach our business in Ireland over the coming months. We have specific actions to follow up on and new initiatives to explore with our partners.

Our approach to partnership is built on continuous engagement and regular interaction. This visit was one part of an ongoing process of deepening our relationships and exploring how we can add value for all parties involved. We believe that this investment in understanding our supply chain and nurturing our partnerships directly benefits our clients through more reliable supply, better quality products, and genuine assurance about where their timber comes from.

If you have interest in sourcing timber from Ireland or elsewhere in Europe, or if you would like to discuss how our approach to partnership and supply chain management can support your business, we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you. Please feel free to get in touch.
